Frequently Asked Questions

How does LGBTQ+ workplace training benefit my organization?

Our customized LGBTQ+ training provides a multitude of benefits. It fosters a more inclusive culture where LGBTQ+ employees can feel welcomed, understood, and bring their full authentic selves to work. This increased belonging leads to higher engagement and retention of LGBTQ+ talent. The training also equips your full team with crucial knowledge around LGBTQ+ identities, inclusive language, and best practices. This open education promotes innovative thinking from diverse perspectives. Overall, an LGBTQ+ inclusive workplace improves your employer brand and creates a harmonious environment for all.

What makes your LGBTQ+ training different from general DEI training?

With over 20 years of lived LGBTQ+ experience, I bring unmatched expertise and perspective tailored specifically to the LGBTQ+ community's needs. My training goes beyond just raising awareness to provide a truly safe, judgement-free zone for participants to ask questions and have open discussions. I also offer customized resources like policy audits, terminology guides, and recommendations to continually reinforce an LGBTQ+ inclusive culture long-term.

What formats do your LGBTQ+ training and resources come in?

I offer live in-person and virtual training sessions to allow for interactive discussions. For convenience, on-demand modules are also available. My services include custom resources like LGBTQ+ terminology guides, pronoun tutorials, policy audits, process flowcharts, and more. I'm happy to mix-and-match formats to create a holistic LGBTQ+ inclusion strategy tailored to your needs. Applying a one-size-fits-all-solution is not a helpful approach because what works for one workplace culture may not work for another, especially geographically and outside influences like anti-LGBTQ+ legislation.

What size organizations do you typically work with?

I have extensive experience working with businesses of all sizes - from startups and small companies to multinational corporations. I've partnered with LGBTQ+ employee resource groups, mental health practitioners like social workers and therapists, local community organizations, national non-profits, universities, and healthcare systems. No organization is too big or too small to benefit from LGBTQ+ training and consulting to create a truly inclusive environment.

While I strive to meet every organization's needs, there may be instances where my services are not the ideal fit. In those cases, I'm happy to provide referrals to other LGBTQ+ trainers who could be a better match.

I'm concerned about defensive pushback during LGBTQ+ training sessions. How do you address that?

I understand that concern. By establishing a foundation of openness, vulnerability and learning from the start, I create an environment that disarms defensiveness. Participants quickly realize this is a space for asking any questions without judgment. I use personal stories and scenarios to build understanding. If pushback arises, I lean into curiosity over confrontation to have a thoughtful dialogue. My years of experience have equipped me to deftly navigate and defuse tension in a productive manner.

I'm new to organizing events for my company or organization. What do I need to do?

For employees (especially ERG members) pitching an LGBTQ+ event or program internally for the first time, it's helpful to understand your organization's processes in advance:

  1. Identify who signs service agreements (HR manager, ERG lead, etc.)
  2. Determine if legal needs to review/revise vendor contracts.
  3. Clarify accounting's payment preferences (checks, Bill.com, NET30, etc.) and processing timelines. ERG leads may be able to pay upfront via company card.
  4. Obtain the budget range or estimate. If lower than quoted, consider co-sponsoring with other ERGs or reallocation from training/development budgets.
  5. If lacking C-Suite buy-in, collaborate with HR on a pitch deck tying the program back to the organization's mission and values.

If unsure how to proceed, start by consulting your manager. These processes can sometimes take months, so contact preferred speakers/trainers well in advance when possible.
